Bauchi mourns as gunmen shoot three dead, injure one other in midnight attack

By Charly Agwam – Bauchi

Bauchi residents are mourning an attack on Yadagungume and Limi communities in Ningi local government area of Bauchi State by unknown gunmen which left three residents dead and injured one other in the early hours of Wednesday.

The victims, Shuaibu Salihu (17), Ruwa Ali also known as Mai Inji (45), and Sunusi Isah Burra were reportedly killed in their sleep around 12 midnight, a source told Vanguard.

According to him, the two villages woke up to sporadic shooting that caused panic among the villagers.

Although the reason for the attack is yet to be known, the source who suspected that the gunmen came to kidnap some people, said that they shot at everything in sight which led to the death of three people.

“What happened here last night was a terrible thing. Three people were killed and another person was left with bullet wounds. The story this morning is that they came to kidnap some people but because one of them resisted, they got angry and started shooting at everyone.

“The gunmen later went with two people but somehow, one of them escaped. To our surprise some women who were one their way to farm saw the body of the victim they took with them. Nobody knows what happened along the way.

“We heard that they also attacked Limi village and killed one person there before leaving. We don’t know what exactly their mission is because they didn’t burn any house and they didn’t kidnap people except those two who they later killed. Everyone is mourning today because of this unfortunate thing that has happened to us,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer of Bauchi Command, Ahmed Wakil said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Mamman Sanda has directed the Area Commander and the DPO of Burra Station to intensify efforts to see that the perpetrators of the dastardly act are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

His words: “We received the news of an incident of kidnapping which was reported today, 11th May, 2023 at about 5.00am. It was reported at our Yadagungume outstation and it was transferred to Burra Divisional headquarters.

“The incident happened around 02.00hours. Some unknown gunmen invaded Yadagungume village shot the following two persons: one Shuaibu Sani, 25 years and one Ruwa Ali, 35 years, all males, living in Limi village via Sama Ward, while one Yusuf Sani, 30 years old of Yadagungume sustained bullet wounds on his body and was rushed to General Hospital Ningi, he is presently on admission receiving treatment.

“One Shuaibu Bala, a 26 year old of the same Yadagungume was abducted and was whisked away to an unknown destination by the unknown gunmen.

“However, the Command later received a distress call from area. When our team of Policemen went to the scene of the crime, 13 empty shells of AK-47 were recovered there. Presently, the suspects are still at large.

“The two corpses were taken to a hospital in Yadagungume for medical examination where they were certified dead by a medical doctor and their remains were released to their families for proper burial. One of the victims I mentioned above that was kidnapped, was later found with a bullet wounds on his body. He too, his corpse was taken to the hospital, we are still waiting for his medical report.”

He added that the Commissioner of Police has reiterated that a coordinated patrol and surveillance would be carried out in all strategic locations in Ningi or Burra and other areas to ensure that criminal elements are apprehended and demobilized without any collateral damages to the citizens.
