…Herders kill 11 person in Benue
In the early hours of Sunday, 11 persons were slain in a new attack by suspected herders at Igama community in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to sources in the neighborhood, the attackers burned down every house in the village, leaving no structure standing.
“Fulani herders raided Igama village in the early hours of today (Sunday) and launched an attack on the community’s youths.
“They let the elderly, children, and women flee while they descended on the younger ones,” a resident who did not want to be identified told our correspondent over the phone. “As I speak to you, eleven young men have been killed.”
Mrs Amina Audu, the LG chairperson, confirmed the attack but stated that nine bodies had been retrieved and sent to the council headquarters in Okpoga as of the time she spoke with our correspondent on the phone at 4:22pm on Sunday.
“I had the word that the Fulani herders assaulted Igama community between 4:00 and 6:00 this morning,” she claimed (Sunday).
“As I speak with you, I am in the Okpoga police station, where three corpses have been brought from the village, and people from the area have just told me that another six corpses are on their way to be carried to the mortuary.”
“The attackers were alleged to have left women, children, and the old to flee, but they attacked and slaughtered youths in the neighborhood,” Audu continued. They also set fire to all of the homes in the neighborhood.
When called, Catherine Anene, a Superintendent of Police with the state Command, confirmed the attack but stated the command had not yet received specifics.
“The event has been confirmed,” Anene stated in a statement, “but the command has yet to receive specifics from police who responded to the scene.”
